Heading
northwest from the entry point takes you over
an extensive field of gorgonian seafans in
varying shades of orange, all regimentally
standing in rows perpendicular to the wall
so as to filter nutrients from the flowing
waters.
This
configuration continues through a gorge which
leads up to 24m (80ft). Fish life here consists
mainly of small Checkerboard and Lunar Wrasse,
with seafans swaying to and from in the swell
as the current passes up and over the wall.
At
this depth the south of the rocky structure
seems fairly barren, but ascending to a depth
of 11m (36ft) brings you to "Maurice Ledge",
a rocky plateau, with shelves at varying depths
all interconnected by a matrix of slopes, steps
and caverns.
This
area is much more radiant than the others,
and features a high presence and diversity
of marine life, plus large patches of orange
and yellow encrusting sponges.
