Location:
between
Hayes island and Sergeant island
in the North area.
We found
this site during the season 02/03
and named it "Orange Rock" a
fantastic site! a "pyramid" style
pinnacle in a middle of a pass.
Conditions:
can only be dived at during slack
tide.
The pinnacle
is lying 5 meter beneath the surface.
Often strong currents attracting
a lot of fish.
The entry has to be timed very well and as close as possible
to the summit of this huge rock to avoid drifting away
from the site. The depth is down to 40 meter, extensive
fields of orange and white gorgonian seafans (hence the
name). Among this configuration black blotched rays or
blue spotted stingrays can be seen regulary.
Whilst moving
up you will discover a huge sandy
place on the East, circled by boulders
/stones. Here is the last part
of the pinnacle, from 25 meter
depth to the surface in a kind
of sugar loaf cutted vertically
in 2 parts. Fish life is truly
abundant and considerably more
then any other site around.
The main
reason is the current, sometimes
with speeds more than 3 knots,
which brings plenty of oxygen and
nutrients in.
The top
is covered by multicolor alcyons
and soft corals sheltering a enormous
population of antias, wrasse, blennies,
cowries, scorpionfish.
The highlight
are these mobular rays turning
around the "Orange Rock" feeding
from plankton and investigating
the divers by 15 or 10 meter depth.
